Why Store wine and what is the best wine storage facility for your needs.

If you want the best from your wine and you intend to keep your rose, red or white wine for months or years and mature the wine to its best then there are a few things to consider before diving in and choosing wine merchants.

Wine is best stored at low temperatures and tht is why wine is often stored under ground or in a basement or wine sellar. Higher temperatures 70 degrees or above badly affect the quality and the taste or the wine. Poorly kept wine would not impress friends or neighbours at a dinner party or wine tasting night.

Around 55 degrees is the best temperature for storage and maintaining this temperature is also important as wine does not do well in areas where the temperature fluctuates. Humidity should be 60-70%. 80% or more may cause mold to develop on the bottles and corks. The wine should also be kept away from vibrations or excessive movement.

Since the above is not always readily available, most houses do not have ready installed wine cellars, wine fridges or wine rooms & offsite storage may be a sensible solution for the larger collectors.

Either your own offsite cellar or through private companies that already offer this service and can allocate storage customised to the needs of your reds, white, champagnes and rose's. Offsite wine storage is charged by the case or by the locker so the charges can be relatively small but they may charge a fee for removing the wine as well as replacing it.

Other solutions are wine fridges & wine rooms, some companies supply special fridges and insulated rooms and wine cellar equipment and fittings and wine racks.
